How Does Planning Poker Work?

Planning Poker works by having team members estimate the effort required for a task using numbered cards. Each member selects a card privately, then reveals their choice simultaneously.

How Does Scrumarise Work?

Scrumarise provides a structured approach to planning poker sessions, making estimation collaborative and efficient. Here's a step-by-step guide to how it works:

The Estimation Process

  1. Hand out the cards: Participants are all given an identical deck of cards each with a different value. The pointing technique can be changed (Fibonacci, Modified Fibonacci, T-shirt Sizes etc.)

  2. Explain the user story: Next, the product owner (or another member of the team) will explain the story out loud to the group.

  3. Discuss the user story: Everyone has heard the story and has at least a bit of knowledge about the user story. The group will discuss it considering different aspects, such as:

    • Development strategy

    • Potential risks and challenges

    • How many people would be involved

    • Which skill sets will be required

    • If any blockers are present or not

In this step, participants can ask questions about the story to clarify the story if needed.

  4. Estimation: After the discussion and question phase now it is time to vote. Each person will anonymously choose a point from the deck to represent their estimate of story points. When everyone is ready, the cards will be revealed at the same time.

  5. Conclusion: If all participants reveal the same point, then that point becomes the consensus. The point will be assigned to the story and the group can move on to the next story.

But if the revealed points differ, then another discussion may appear about the story. There would be an average of the points which can be used to lead the discussion. Those with higher or lower estimates than the average will explain their reasoning and try to persuade the others in the group.

At the end of the discussion, the group needs to conclude with a point that everyone agrees. Then the point will be assigned to the story and the group can move on to the next story.
